Frequently Asked Questions About Matric APS & Admissions

Everything you need to know about calculating points, subject choices, and tertiary admission in South Africa.

How is an APS (Admissions Point Score) calculated?

An APS score is calculated by converting your matric percentages into points based on the 7-level achievement scale (80–100% = 7 points, 70–79% = 6 points, down to 0–29% = 0 points). The Department of Basic Education calculates your overall pass across all 7 subjects. However, most South African universities (like Wits, UP, Stellenbosch, UJ, and NWU) compute your University APS by summing only your best 6 subjects, strictly excluding Life Orientation (maximum score of 42 points).

What is the difference between a Bachelor’s Pass and a Diploma Pass?

A Bachelor's Degree Pass (Matric Exemption) requires at least 40% in your Home Language, at least 50% in four designated high-credit subjects, and an overall APS of 23 or higher. It qualifies you to apply for university degree programs (BSc, BA, BCom, BEng, etc.). A Diploma Pass requires at least 40% in Home Language and three other subjects, allowing entry into National Diploma courses at Universities of Technology (TUT, CPUT, DUT, VUT) and comprehensive universities.

Can I study Engineering or Medicine with Mathematical Literacy?

No. In South Africa, professional degrees in Engineering (ECSA-accredited) and Medicine (MBChB) strictly mandate Pure Mathematics (typically 65–70%+ for Engineering and 70–80%+ for Medicine) and Physical Sciences. However, students with Mathematical Literacy can pursue high-demand degrees in Law (LLB), Nursing, High School Teaching (BEd), Accounting/Finance diplomas, and Schooler Academy's professional tech programs.

What is Report 550 / the Amended Senior Certificate for Adult Learners?

Report 550 governs the Amended Senior Certificate for adults aged 21 and older and out-of-school youth aged 18–21 who did not finish school. Candidates write six subjects (excluding Life Orientation) and must pass at least five subjects: three at ≥ 40% (including Home Language) and two at ≥ 30%, with a subminimum of 20% on the sixth subject. It is recognized at NQF Level 4 by Umalusi for tertiary and TVET entry.
